A physical memorial is the final destination for those of us who choose that form of concluding ritual. But a gravesite is also a statement. Sometimes the gravesite is modest and reports little beside our name and dates. Other times we display our honors, our portrait, and our loyalties. We are father; we are uncle; we are golfer, we are loyal fallen soldiers.

This collection of images began in 2009 as a documentary project of Jewish gravestones for the Oregon Jewish Museum. Then, I found myself fascinated by Native American cemeteries, a national cemetery in Israel, a Buddhist cemetery in Kyoto, and a Muslim Cemetery in China. For sure, there will be other photographs to include in this collection.

Dali, China; Central Oregon; Jerusalem, Israel; Kyoto, Japan; Portland, Oregon
